Matt’s Idea, Trinity’s Heart: A Breakfast That Gave Back

(Article inspired by Jennifer Cartwright’s piece in the Yorkshire Evening Post)

History shows that some of the best ideas have been sparked over a shared meal and for Matt Chew, an organist at Trinity Church, Rawdon, that certainly proved true. When Matt heard that beloved local bakery Croissant d’Or, was struggling with the cost of replacing a broken commercial oven, he knew something had to be done.

With a heart for community and a passion for bringing people together, Matt decided to turn an ordinary breakfast into something extraordinary. He rallied Trinity Church to host a special community breakfast fundraiser, and the response was nothing short of amazing.

A Testament to True Community Spirit

Matt Chew and Tina Kébé at the event

The event which held at Trinity Church, saw locals, churchgoers, and business owners come together for a morning filled with great food, music, and generosity. Guests were treated to a delicious breakfast supported by Matt’s own Mediterranean restaurant, Turkuaz, and, of course, Croissant d’Or.

With voluntary donations pouring in, the breakfast raised an impressive £400, contributing to the £6,000 raised so far toward the hefty £18,000 goal!. But beyond the funds, the event captured something even more valuable: the spirit of community. This wasn’t just about croissants (though we read they were delicious); it was about community spirit at its finest. Matt’s weekly coffee mornings at the bakery had already fostered strong connections, and this event took that sense of togetherness to the next level.

The impact of this simple yet powerful gathering was felt by many. Tina Kébé, owner of Croissant d’Or, was deeply moved by the support, calling it a “beautiful reflection of community coming together.” Attendees described the event as a blend of cultures, denominations, and backgrounds, all united by a shared desire to help a small business thrive.

Matt, who has previously helped organise many church and community fundraisers, hopes to host more events to continue supporting local businesses and causes in Rawdon. For Matt, this wasn’t just about raising money. It was about proving that when a community comes together, real change happens.

A Well-Deserved Applause for Matt & Trinity Church

Moments like these remind us of the incredible power of churches beyond Sunday services. We love seeing churches living out their faith in action, stepping up to bless their communities in creative and meaningful ways. A huge applause to Matt for leading this effort and to Trinity Church for opening its doors and hearts!

This is what community looks like. Whether it’s through a fundraiser, a food drive, or simply lending a helping hand, there’s always an opportunity to make a difference. What’s your next idea?
