Improving our Tech Skills with Ben Stacey

In response to a growing number of our churches asking questions about live-streaming and their online presence, the YBA teamed up with Ben Stacey for a series of free Tech Skills Webinars. We delivered topics ranging from the basics of online streaming, building an online service, as well as considering how to interpret our online presence in terms of our mission and ministry.

The sessions aimed to help those with very limited understanding of live-streaming and at the same time, help those who had already started to explore this area of ministry and witness to further develop their skills.

Ben is a part of our Baptist family and is an elder at Swallownest Baptist Church on the outskirts of Sheffield. He runs an audio visual company, Plugged-in Audio Visual, so he is well placed to know and understand our context and needs.

What is a live-stream and how do I produce one?

OUR first webinar looked at the very basics of live-streaming. This webinar was aimed at anyone with little or no knowledge of using video on the internet but wanted to begin learning the basic building blocks required to produce a live-streamed video for their church.

Lights, cameras, microphones

OUR second webinar focused on the equipment required to produce a video for use online. This session lookied at pre-recorded video as well as live-streaming and the similarities and differences between the two.

What's the story?

OUR third webinar tackled one of the most challenging subjects - storytelling. This webinar was designed for anyone with an understanding of video-making and creating videos for online use and live-streaming. It examined how different camera angles can change the way your video is understood, how and when to cut between a wide angle shot and a close shot and how to use lighting to draw attention to the most important things in your videos.

What is the role of technology in the future of our church?

In the fourth part of our technical webinar series we discussed the role of technology in the future of the church.
The session, held on Zoom, challenged and encouraged participants to think about what the future of the church would look like. We looked at our numbers and how online viewing figures compared to our in-person meeting numbers. We also discussed ‘What does the gathered church look like online?
