Advent 2017 - Introduction

Stepping Out with God – Advent 2017

Stepping Out logoFOR Christians, Advent is our season of waiting and preparing for the most significant event of all time – the birth of Immanuel, God with us, who is Mary’s baby, Jesus.

During Advent we each prepare to respond to this event. In our churches and as individuals, we will offer worship, prepare our hearts, wonder at God at work in the past, present and future. In addition, as the Yorkshire Baptist family, we want to share together an Advent 2017 challenge.

If God has stepped out into human life, born in time and space in a truly unexpected way; how will we step out in response?

Stepping out can look like lots of different things but it will be about going outside our normal comfort zone, taking new initiatives, doing things differently or meeting different people, and it will require of us a lot or a little courage. The reason we want to take up this challenge is that experience shows that it is at the times when we step out, that we most experience God at work in our world.

For each of the weeks of Advent we will take a traditional theme and look at it from the point of view of stepping out into an adventure with God. There will be a story from somewhere in Yorkshire, a reflection on the theme – and the challenge to step out in a similar way and then share your own story with us all. This can be something we begin in Advent but ask and expect God to turn into a way of life.

This Advent reflection has been prepared by the Revds Andy and Jo Williams, of Blackley Baptist Church, near Halifax.

Week Two – Stepping out in Prophetic Ways - click here - features a reflection prepared by James Martin, a member of Cemetery Road Baptist Church, Sheffield, and the YBA's Yorkshire Justice Hub. There is also a story by Jody and Jackie Gabriel, who lived in a L'Arche community - click here.
