Yorkshire Churches on Show

Terry Hepworth“MOST people in Yorkshire have heard of the Great Yorkshire Show – but have you heard of the Yorkshire Church on Show?” asks the Revd Terry Hepworth, minister at Lee Mount Baptist Church, Halifax.

“The Great Yorkshire Show is held every July over three days at the Harrogate Showground – and this year the dates are the 11th to the 13th.

YCOS logo“The Yorkshire Church on Show (YCOS) is an exhibition with a Christian message within the Great Yorkshire Show. It is my privilege to represent the YBA as the West Yorkshire Ecumenical Officer and also as secretary of the YCOS general committee – and the Association makes a financial gift each year to support the cost of YCOS.

“The Church on Show is what it says in the name. For many years churches across the whole of Yorkshire have put on a display in the old cricket pavilion right at the heart of the showground. In the early years it was a showcase for what the churches of Yorkshire had to offer but in recent years it has become more focused on simply presenting God to the people.

“The display is interactive and involves Christians from all denominations. Around 3,000 people visit the stand over the three days, including non-Christians. There are opportunities to chat, and clergy are always available to help those with deeper needs and who need particular support.

“Although not outwardly evangelical, the stand presents the Gospel in such a way as to make people think outside themselves and to reflect on the bigger picture of life.

“If you are coming to the show this year pop in and see us - I will be there for all three days so make yourself known. And if anyone would like to volunteer to steward, get in touch. Stewards are needed for either a morning or an afternoon and get a free day pass to the show.”
